Understanding Attachment-Based Therapy: Healing Through Relationships

By Clair Lewoski | Cambridge Therapies

Have you ever found yourself stuck in recurring relationship patterns, struggling to trust others, or feeling overwhelmed by emotional closeness? These experiences often stem from something deeper: our early attachment experiences.

As a psychotherapist trained in attachment-based therapy, I work with both adults and young people to explore how early relationships shape the way we connect, trust, and respond emotionally. Understanding and healing these patterns can lead to lasting change.

What is Attachment-Based Therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is grounded in the idea that our earliest bonds—typically with parents or caregivers—form our expectations of relationships throughout life. If these early bonds were secure, we’re more likely to grow up feeling safe, loved, and confident. But if they were inconsistent, unavailable, or neglectful, we might struggle with emotional regulation, intimacy, or self-worth.

As a UKCP-registered psychotherapist, I help clients understand how past relationships influence present difficulties—then begin to gently repair them.

Who Is Attachment-Based Therapy For?

Adults with relationship anxiety or avoidance- Children who show signs of withdrawal, anger, or fearfulness- Individuals struggling with low self-esteem or abandonment fears- People experiencing depression, anxiety, or chronic loneliness- Parents who want to better understand their child’s emotional needs

Real-Life Examples (all names and identities changed to protect confidentiality):

  • Emma, 35, felt like every relationship ended the same way. We explored her childhood experience with an emotionally unavailable mother, which helped her begin forming healthier relationships.

  • Lucas, 9, had frequent meltdowns and difficulty making friends. Therapy revealed early separation anxiety, and with support, he became more confident and socially connected.

How Working With Me Can Help:

At Cambridge Therapies, I offer a warm, non-judgmental space tailored to individual needs. Together, we explore and address the patterns that are holding you or your child back.

Why Choose an Attachment-Based Approach?

Attachment sits at the heart of how we experience the world. This approach doesn’t just treat symptoms — it transforms relationships from the inside out.
