The Power of Self-Compassion in Therapy: Healing Begins Within

By Clair Lewoski | Cambridge Therapies

Many of us are far kinder to others than we are to ourselves. We offer support and understanding to friends—but when it comes to our own struggles, we often meet them with harshness or criticism.

In my work as a psychotherapist, I’ve seen how learning to practise self-compassion can be life-changing. It’s a gentle, yet powerful, tool that can soften shame, reduce anxiety, and help people reconnect with their worth.

What Is Self-Compassion?

Self-compassion means treating yourself with the same care and empathy you would offer a loved one in distress. It involves:- Being kind to yourself rather than self-critical- Recognising that suffering is part of being human- Being mindful of your emotions without becoming overwhelmed.

Why Self-Compassion Matters in Therapy:

Many clients come to therapy carrying guilt, shame, or self-blame. When we introduce self-compassion, clients begin to soften. They gain a new way of relating to themselves—with kindness rather than judgment.

Real-Life Examples (all names and identities changed to protect confidentiality)

  • Sophie, a mother of two, felt constantly burnt out. In therapy, she realised her inner critic was driving her exhaustion. With self-compassion, she began to set boundaries and feel lighter.

  • Ayaan, 11, described himself as “bad” after struggling at school. Therapy helped him practise self-kindness, which led to greater confidence and calm.

How Working With Me Can Help:

At Cambridge Therapies, I integrate self-compassion into my work with adults, teens, and children. It’s not about avoiding hard feelings—but about learning to meet them gently.

Why It’s a Game-Changer:

Self-compassion builds resilience, reduces reactivity, and helps clients grow a stronger, more loving inner voice.
